312 Kitchen & Bath highlights three continuing design trends for custom bath remodels.

Based on the 2023 Design Trends report* by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), there are many exciting trends for custom bathroom remodels expected to increase over the next three years including smart technology, sustainability and opening space.

Smart technology

Based on the 2023 Design Trends report, there will be an increased demand for smart technology in bathrooms over the next three years. Depending on how the technology is incorporated, it can help you save time, money and energy. The great news is that there are numerous ways that smart technology can be incorporated into your custom bathroom remodel including:⁠

Heated floors
Temperature control
Moisture control
Voice or app-controlled options
Smart toilets/bidets
Smart mirrors
Lighting and physical therapy options for showers

Sustainability

The NKBA report also lists a continued trend of incorporating sustainability in custom bathroom remodels. There are numerous sustainability options when remodeling your bathroom including:

100% LED lighting
Electric radiant flooring
EPA WaterSense faucets/shower heads/toilets
Increased natural light via large high-performance low-E windows & doors
Alternative energy efficient water heaters
VOC free paints & stains

Opening Space

Your bathroom is your oasis along with your primary bedroom. It makes sense to take full advantage of all the available space and to optimize it for your needs. And based on the 2023 Design Trends report, opening space in the primary bathroom continues to be an important request by homeowners. Opening space could include removing the tub or removing walls to increase the overall primary bathroom footprint. Another highly-requested customization is to change the layout in order to connect to a dressing area or the primary closet.
